Best Time to Visit Cape Verde

For most travellers, the best time to visit Cape Verde is between November and May. Conditions are generally dry, temperatures are comfortable and the weather works well for beaches, hiking and sightseeing.

But Cape Verde is genuinely a year-round destination. The best month depends on what you want from the trip: stronger winds suit kitesurfers, late summer brings warmer seas and greener mountain scenery, and turtle nesting takes place during the warmer months.

The important thing is to choose your dates based on what you want to do and which islands you're visiting.

Cape Verde weather at a glance

Best overall: November to May
Warmest months: August to October
Wetter period: August to October
Best for hiking: October to May
Best for kitesurfing: November to May
Strongest winds: January to April
Sea turtle nesting: June to October
Warmest sea: September and October

Cape Verde has an arid to semi-arid climate, with average daytime temperatures generally around 24–28°C. Sea temperatures stay relatively mild throughout the year, reaching their warmest around September and October.

Cape Verde's seasons

Cape Verde is easier to understand as a long dry season followed by a shorter, warmer and somewhat wetter period.

November to July — dry season

This is the most predictable period for sunshine and low rainfall.

It works particularly well for first-time visitors, beach holidays and trips involving several islands. January and February are among the mildest months, while temperatures gradually rise through spring and early summer.

The main thing to consider is wind. The trade winds are strongest during winter and early spring, particularly on exposed islands such as Sal and Boa Vista.

August to October — warmer and wetter

These are Cape Verde's hottest and most humid months, with a greater chance of rain.

The phrase rainy season can be misleading. Cape Verde remains relatively dry compared with many tropical destinations, and rainfall tends to be concentrated into occasional periods rather than continuous wet weather.

Mountainous islands such as Santo Antão, Santiago and Fogo can become noticeably greener after the rains, while Sal and Boa Vista remain much more arid.

This period can be especially appealing if you prefer warmer sea temperatures and greener landscapes.

Cape Verde month by month

Month Typical conditions Best for
January Dry, mild, windy Winter sun, kitesurfing
February Dry, breezy Carnival, hiking
March Sunny, dry, windy Hiking, watersports
April Warm and dry Mixed island trips
May Warm, mostly dry Beaches, island hopping
June Hotter, mostly dry Beaches, turtle season
July Warm, dry Summer trips, turtles
August Hot, humid, occasional rain Warm seas
September Hot, wetter, greener Turtles, lush scenery
October Transition month Hiking, warm water
November Dry season returns All-round travel
December Dry, warm, breezy Winter sun, watersports

Best time for beaches

For a straightforward beach holiday, November to July gives you the most reliable dry conditions.

Sal and Boa Vista are particularly dependable because they are among Cape Verde's driest islands.

If warmer sea temperatures matter more than completely dry weather, September and October are strong alternatives.

Meskel tip

If you're travelling mainly for the beach but dislike strong wind, consider late spring or early autumn rather than the windiest winter months.

Best time for kitesurfing and windsurfing

The main wind season runs from roughly November to May, with the strongest winds usually between January and April.

Sal and Boa Vista have the most developed infrastructure for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

If watersports are one of the main reasons for travelling, winter and early spring are usually the strongest periods.

Best period: January to April
Broader season: November to May

Best time for hiking

For Santo Antão, Fogo and Cape Verde's other mountainous islands, October to May generally offers the most comfortable walking conditions.

Temperatures are more manageable and trails are usually drier than during the wetter late-summer period.

There is a trade-off, though. Visit shortly after the rains and islands such as Santo Antão can look dramatically greener.

Best for predictable hiking: November to May
Best for greener landscapes: September to November

Best time to see turtles

Loggerhead turtles nest on several Cape Verde islands between June and October, including Sal, Boa Vista and Maio.

The middle of this period generally offers some of the strongest nesting activity.

If you join a turtle-watching excursion, use a responsible local conservation organisation or authorised guide. Nesting turtles should not be approached independently.

Best period: July to September

Best time for whale watching

Humpback whales visit Cape Verde's waters during the first half of the year.

Sightings are particularly associated with islands such as Boa Vista and Maio, with the main season broadly falling between February and May.

As with any wildlife experience, sightings are never guaranteed.

Best time to visit Sal and Boa Vista

Sal and Boa Vista are the easiest islands to visit year-round because both are relatively dry and focused heavily on beaches.

November to May works particularly well for winter sun and watersports.

Consider September or October if you prefer warmer sea temperatures and generally lighter winds.

Best time to visit Santo Antão

Santo Antão is a very different proposition.

The island is mountainous and best known for walking, valleys and dramatic scenery rather than resort beaches.

For hiking, October to May is generally the easiest period.

Travelling shortly after the wetter months can reward you with greener landscapes, but trails may be less predictable.

Best time to visit São Vicente

São Vicente can work throughout the year, particularly if Mindelo's music, restaurants and cultural life are the main draw.

If you're travelling specifically for Carnival, the festival normally falls in February or March depending on the calendar.

For Carnival travel, book around the festival itself rather than choosing dates purely for weather.

Best time to visit Santiago

Santiago combines Praia, beaches, historic sites and a mountainous interior.

The dry season is easiest for exploring, but rainfall during late summer can transform inland landscapes and make the island noticeably greener.

Best time to visit Fogo

Fogo's main attraction is its volcanic landscape.

If you're planning to hike, cooler and drier months are generally more comfortable than the hotter late-summer period.

What is the Harmattan?

Between roughly December and February, Cape Verde can experience Harmatão — dry Saharan dust carried across the Atlantic.

Strong episodes can reduce visibility and sometimes affect photography, diving conditions or transport.

It is not a reason to avoid Cape Verde in winter, but it's worth knowing about if clear mountain views or underwater visibility are particularly important to your trip.

So, when should you visit Cape Verde?

For a first trip, November, April and May offer a particularly good balance of dry weather, warm temperatures and flexibility across several islands.

Choose:

November to May for the easiest all-round conditions.

January to April for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

October to May for hiking.

June to October for nesting turtles.

September or October for warmer seas and greener mountain landscapes.

There isn't really a single bad month to visit Cape Verde.

The more useful question is:

Which islands do you want to visit, and what do you want to do once you're there?
